Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Sales Surge in Korea Post-iPhone Duo Announcement

Recent reports from South Korea indicate a significant uptick in sales for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. Following Apple's unveiling of its anticipated "iPhone Duo," the weekly sales of Samsung's premier foldable device saw an approximate 10% increase. This surge suggests that many potential buyers were observing Apple's offering before committing to either the Galaxy Z Fold8 or the yet-to-be-released iPhone Duo.

While the iPhone Duo is slated for a late October release, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is readily available. This immediate availability is cited as a key factor influencing consumers' purchasing decisions in favor of the Samsung foldable. However, the reasons for the Z Fold8's rising popularity extend beyond mere accessibility.

A crucial element driving the Z Fold8's appeal in its home market is its competitive pricing. Samsung offers its devices at a notably lower cost in Korea compared to regions like the US and Europe. For instance, the Z Fold8 retails at $1,900 in the US, while the iPhone Duo is priced at $2,000 for comparable 256GB models. In Europe, the price difference widens, with the Z Fold8 at €2,000 and the iPhone Duo at €2,300.

The price disparity in Korea is particularly striking. The base Galaxy Z Fold8 is available for KRW 2.28 million, a stark contrast to the iPhone Duo's KRW 3.29 million. This substantial 44% price difference appears to have significantly influenced consumer sentiment, leaving many Koreans unimpressed with Apple's inaugural foldable. Adding to this, the iPhone Duo's 2TB variant has made history as the first smartphone to surpass the KRW 5 million mark, costing KRW 5.09 million.

Beyond pricing, the physical design of the iPhone Duo also presents a challenge. It measures 11.3mm in thickness and weighs 254g, making it bulkier than the Galaxy Z Fold8, which boasts a slimmer profile of 9.7mm and a lighter weight of 201g. For a more in-depth comparison of these two wide foldable devices, a detailed breakdown is available. Despite introducing some innovative features, the iPhone Duo reportedly falls short in addressing the fundamental challenges inherent to foldable smartphones, with price being a significant, though not exclusive, concern.
