WhatsApp is stepping up its security game, with a new Scam Alert feature now rolling out to select Android beta testers. This proactive tool aims to safeguard users by identifying and flagging potentially fraudulent messages before they cause harm.

First hinted at in June and officially detailed by Meta recently, the Scam Alert feature is edging closer to a wider public release. WABetaInfo, a reliable source for WhatsApp developments, spotted the feature in beta version 2.26.34.1 for Android. This indicates that a full rollout is likely on the horizon.

The core function of Scam Alert is simple yet powerful: it analyzes incoming messages from unknown senders for suspicious patterns indicative of scams. Crucially, this process happens discreetly; the sender will have no knowledge that their message is being scrutinized by Scam Alert.

When a potential scam is detected, users will receive a clear warning. They are then empowered to take immediate action:

• Mark as Trusted: If the user believes the sender is legitimate, they can mark the conversation as trusted.
• Block and Report: For suspicious contacts, users can easily block and report them, helping to train WhatsApp's systems.

For those who mark a chat as trusted, there's an option to share the last five messages of that conversation with WhatsApp. This voluntary sharing is instrumental in refining the Scam Alert feature's accuracy and improving its ability to detect future threats.

It's important to note that Scam Alert is an optional feature and requires manual activation. Users can find and enable it within WhatsApp for Android's Settings > Account menu.

Meta has emphasized the privacy-centric design of Scam Alert, stating in an official blog post that it utilizes an "on-device machine learning model." This means that:

• No message content leaves the user's device for analysis.
• Messages are not automatically reported to WhatsApp, Meta, or any third party.

The feature operates in conjunction with WhatsApp's robust end-to-end encryption, offering an additional layer of user-controlled protection against potential scams.
