WhatsApp Beta Unveils "Restricted Chat": A New Layer of Privacy for Android and iOS Users
WhatsApp continues to enhance user privacy with its latest feature, "Restricted Chat," now accessible to select beta testers on both Android and iOS platforms. This development builds upon the foundation laid by the Advanced Chat Privacy option, offering an additional layer of control over your conversations.
The Restricted Chat feature, as reported by WABetaInfo, is currently being distributed to users on WhatsApp beta versions 2.26.36.4 for Android and 26.39.10.20 for iOS. This optional feature allows users to manually apply specific privacy settings to individual conversations, rather than having them enabled by default.
Understanding WhatsApp's Restricted Chat Functionality
Once activated from the chat info screen, Restricted Chat imposes four key limitations on participants within the conversation. These restrictions are designed to give users greater command over their message content and interactions:
- Media Saving Disabled: Participants will be unable to automatically save media (photos, videos, etc.) sent within the restricted chat to their devices.
- Chat Export Blocked: The option to export the entire chat history will be unavailable for users in a Restricted Chat.
- Meta AI Integration Limited: Use of Meta AI features within the context of the restricted conversation is prohibited.
- Linked Device Access Restricted: WhatsApp explicitly states that this restriction prevents individuals from using unofficial clients or AI agents to access the chat, thereby bolstering security.
WhatsApp emphasizes that regardless of whether Restricted Chat is enabled, all messages and calls within any conversation remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
While a public rollout timeline for Restricted Chat has not yet been announced, interested Android and iOS users can gain early access by enrolling in the WhatsApp beta program.
