WhatsApp is creating a new Contacts tab in its app

WhatsApp is now testing a dedicated Contacts tab in its Android app. It shows up in the latest beta version which is available through the Google Play Store for those who are enrolled in the beta program. Thus, it's still a work in progress and not available to everyone yet. As you can see in the screenshot below, Contacts is now a new tab in the Android app's navigation bar. It shows your contacts, unsurprisingly, and shows you which of them are currently online with a green dot.

The Contacts list will also show birthday reminders and let you invite new people to WhatsApp (provided there still are any people on the planet who don't have the app installed, of course). For those who have birthdays today, you'll see a cake emoji and "Birthday today" next to the contact's name. The birthday information is automatically pulled from your phone’s contacts. There's a search bar at the top too, letting you find someone by name, number, or username. The list of contacts can be sorted by activity (showing those who are online first), or alphabetically. People who have disabled their last seen status will obviously not show up as online. Source
