WhatsApp Enhances iOS Security with Encrypted Cloud Backups in Testing

WhatsApp, the ubiquitous messaging platform owned by Meta, is actively testing a significant new feature for its iOS users: encrypted cloud storage backups. This move signifies a major step forward in user privacy, allowing chats to be secured beyond the standard cloud offerings.

Previously, in April, reports emerged of WhatsApp developing a similar encrypted cloud backup solution for Android users. Now, WABetaInfo has uncovered evidence of this enhanced security feature being trialed on iOS, specifically within beta version 26.28.10.16 of WhatsApp for iOS.

For iOS users opting for WhatsApp's dedicated encrypted cloud storage, a robust set of security options will be available. Backups can be protected using a passkey, a traditional password, or a lengthy 64-digit encryption key. Crucially, WhatsApp emphasizes that chats backed up to its own cloud will be end-to-end encrypted by default. This offers a higher level of privacy compared to current backup methods on platforms like iCloud, where encryption might be optional. Users would need to revert to iCloud backups to disable this default encryption within WhatsApp's own cloud solution.

While the encrypted cloud storage feature is still under active development for both Android and iOS, its eventual public release is anticipated. It is expected that this new functionality will first be rolled out to beta testers before a wider public launch. The exact timeline for this rollout remains to be seen, but users can look forward to a more secure way to preserve their chat history.
