SpaceX Acquires Crucial Spectrum to Power Starlink Mobile as a US Carrier
Elon Musk's aerospace giant, SpaceX, has taken a significant leap towards becoming a fully-fledged US mobile carrier by acquiring a substantial 14MHz of paired spectrum in the 800MHz band nationwide. This strategic move, finalized through a deal with Grain Management, is being hailed by Musk as "the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America." The ambitious plan leverages Starlink's satellite network for outdoor mobile connectivity, while the newly acquired 800MHz spectrum will be instrumental in ensuring seamless indoor phone coverage.
The widespread compatibility of the 800MHz band with most current smartphones makes this acquisition particularly impactful. Starlink Mobile will also continue to utilize its existing global 2GHz mid-band spectrum for high-speed, high-capacity coverage, primarily for outdoor use across the US. To bolster this offering, the company intends to integrate its satellites with terrestrial femtocells, paving the way for robust 5G mobile coverage.
Upon securing the necessary regulatory approvals for this latest spectrum acquisition, SpaceX plans to implement a "flexible architecture." This advanced deployment will synergistically combine its "satellite-to-mobile constellation in space with an advanced terrestrial deployment that can seamlessly connect devices everywhere." This integrated approach promises to deliver unparalleled connectivity.
The emergence of Starlink Mobile as a direct competitor to established carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile is imminent. With its planned infrastructure, Starlink aims to offer superior outdoor coverage, especially in rural and historically underserved regions. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has already greenlit SpaceX's deployment of 15,000 next-generation satellites to support this ambitious mobile service.
It's noteworthy that the 800MHz spectrum now acquired by SpaceX was originally held by T-Mobile. T-Mobile divested this spectrum to Grain Management in August, in exchange for Grain's 600MHz spectrum licenses and a significant cash sum of $2.9 billion.
