Global Smartphone Shipments Tumble 20% in Q3 2026, Lowest Since 2013

Research firm Omdia has unveiled a new report indicating a significant downturn in the global smartphone market. In the third quarter of 2026, worldwide smartphone shipments experienced a substantial 20 percent year-on-year decline. A total of 254.7 million units were shipped during this period.

This marks the lowest third-quarter shipment volume recorded since 2013, a trend that Omdia attributes primarily to the escalating prices of smartphones. Consumers are facing higher costs, leading to a slowdown in purchasing decisions.

Top Brands Navigate Market Challenges

Despite the overall market contraction, Samsung managed to maintain its lead as the world's largest smartphone manufacturer, shipping 57.8 million units. However, this figure represents a 5 percent decrease compared to the same quarter in the previous year.

Apple secured the second position, with 56.5 million iPhones shipped. Notably, Apple's shipment numbers remained stable, showing no change from the third quarter of 2025.

Xiaomi claimed the third spot with 30.7 million units shipped. This represents a significant year-on-year decline of 29 percent, highlighting the challenging market conditions for the brand.

Oppo and Vivo Also See Declines

Further down the rankings, Oppo landed in fourth place, shipping 23.4 million units, a considerable 39 percent drop from the previous year. Vivo rounded out the top five, with 19.3 million units shipped, reflecting a 33 percent decrease compared to Q3 2025.

In response to these market dynamics, brands are strategically focusing on profitability. This includes targeting lucrative markets, prioritizing key product lines, and adapting to component shortages. Manufacturers are also making adjustments to RAM and storage configurations, as well as streamlining their model lineups to manage rising costs and safeguard profit margins.

Omdia forecasts a continued decline for the global smartphone market, projecting a further 12 percent drop for the current year. The market is expected to continue its downward trajectory into 2027, though at a moderated pace.
