Samsung's First Android XR Glasses: Launch Details Emerge
Samsung recently unveiled its highly anticipated Android XR glasses at the Galaxy Unpacked event. According to a new report originating from South Korea, the official launch is slated for November. While specific pricing details remain undisclosed, the device is expected to be named Intelligent Eyewear.
These innovative glasses will not feature a built-in display. Instead, they are equipped with a camera, microphones, and speakers, designed to work in tandem with a connected Galaxy smartphone. Google's powerful Gemini AI will process both visual and auditory information, allowing for seamless interaction. Users can communicate with the AI verbally, with responses delivered directly through the glasses' integrated speakers.
Samsung aims for its Intelligent Eyewear to be significantly lighter than competitor offerings, targeting a weight of "up to 5g" less than Meta's 51g Ray-Bans. However, the final confirmed weight has yet to be released by Samsung.
The current market for display-less "AI glasses" is dominated by Meta, which holds a substantial 96% market share, as reported by Counterpoint Research. Meta has also recently introduced its camera-less Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses, which boast a lighter design and extended battery life compared to models featuring a camera.
Samsung has confirmed that the Intelligent Eyewear will incorporate LEDs on both the interior and exterior of the frame to clearly indicate when recording is active. Crucially, if the external recording indicator is obstructed, the glasses will automatically disable the recording function, prioritizing user privacy.
