Samsung Galaxy Z Fold9: Under-Display Camera Rumored to Return, Rivaling iPhone Duo
Samsung's innovative Galaxy Z Fold series, known for its book-style folding design, is reportedly set to reintroduce a long-lost feature for its inner display: the under-display camera (UDC). This technology was present on the original Galaxy Z Fold3 in 2021 and continued through the Galaxy Z Fold6. However, the Galaxy Z Fold7 and the recently released Galaxy Z Fold8 series adopted a more conventional punch-hole cutout for the inner selfie camera.
According to recent reports from a tipster on X, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold9 is slated to feature a UDC on its main screen. Alongside this significant display enhancement, the device is expected to incorporate "major internal changes" while maintaining minimal alterations to its overall thickness and design. Earlier in the month, the same source indicated that the Galaxy Z Fold9 is already in development, with ambitious target dimensions of 3.9mm when unfolded and 7.9mm when folded.
This strategic move by Samsung appears to position the Galaxy Z Fold9 as a direct competitor to Apple's anticipated foldable, the "iPhone Duo." It's worth noting that Apple's rumored first foldable device is said to employ a 4MP under-display selfie camera on its inner screen, making Samsung's potential return to UDC technology a plausible and competitive response.
Important Note: As with any unconfirmed rumor, it's advisable to approach these details with a degree of skepticism. The reported thickness figures for the Galaxy Z Fold9, for instance, present a notable discrepancy when compared to the current Galaxy Z Fold8's unfolded (4.5mm) and folded (9.7mm) dimensions. A significant reduction to 7.9mm folded for a device with "minimal changes to its overall thickness" suggests these might be early development targets or pertain to a potential "Fold9 Ultra" variant. Many aspects of these reports remain speculative at this stage.
