Tensor G6: Google's Pixel 11 Chip Isn't 2nm, But What Does That Mean?

The highly anticipated Pixel 11 series has arrived, and with it, the new Tensor G6 chip. While many speculated that the Tensor G6 would leverage cutting-edge 2nm process technology, new information from Google reveals a different story.

According to Peng Yu-Chun, Google's VP of Hardware, the Tensor G6 powering all Pixel 11 models is actually built on TSMC's 3nm process. This is the same manufacturing node used for last year's Tensor G5, suggesting a focus on refinement rather than a generational leap in fabrication. It's worth noting that even if the Tensor G6 had been a 2nm chip, Samsung's Exynos 2600, announced in December, would have beaten it to the market as the first mobile chip on that process.

However, the absence of a 2nm process doesn't mean the Tensor G6 is a disappointment. Google highlights significant internal improvements:

  • 50% more TPU compute, promising enhanced AI and machine learning capabilities.
  • An upgraded CPU that delivers up to 30% better power efficiency compared to the Tensor G5.

The true impact of these upgrades on the user experience will only be evident once the Pixel 11 series undergoes thorough testing. The Pixel 11 lineup includes the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
