iPhone Camera Innovations: What to Expect in Future Generations

Whispers of a significant camera leap for iPhones have been circulating for some time, with two previous rumors hinting at a 200MP sensor. Initially, this high-resolution sensor was speculated for the main camera, followed by a later report suggesting a 200MP telephoto lens potentially arriving as late as 2028.

A fresh leak from Digital Chat Station on Weibo aims to clarify these upcoming advancements. It appears Apple is gearing up for a substantial annual camera upgrade for its Pro models, kicking off with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this September. These flagship devices are expected to debut the highly anticipated variable aperture feature.

Looking further ahead, the 2027 Pro iPhones are reportedly set to feature a groundbreaking 200MP main camera, boasting a substantial 1/1.12-inch sensor. The innovation continues into 2028, with the introduction of a 200MP periscope telephoto camera. This means that the iPhone Pro models in 2028 will be equipped with two distinct 200MP cameras, offering unparalleled photographic flexibility.

Furthermore, sometime between 2027 and 2028, Apple is also rumored to implement gimbal-like optical image stabilization (OIS) for the ultrawide camera. These forthcoming enhancements promise a dynamic few years for the iPhone Pro series, though the gradual rollout of these advanced features is noteworthy.
