iPhone Fold Rumors Point to Innovative 3D Printed Hinge for a Seamless Display

Speculation surrounding Apple's potential foldable device, the iPhone Fold, continues to heat up, with a recent report from China suggesting a key innovation: a 3D printed hinge. This advanced manufacturing technique is reportedly being employed to significantly reduce or even eliminate the visible crease on its flexible display.

While this is the first time specific details about 3D printing in the iPhone Fold's hinge have emerged, previous rumors have hinted at other premium materials like liquid metal and dual-layer glass. The integration of a 3D printed hinge could be a game-changer for the foldable market.

This isn't entirely uncharted territory for the industry. Oppo, for instance, has already implemented a similar approach with its Find N6's second-generation Titanium Flexion hinge. Oppo achieved a remarkably "zero-feel crease" by utilizing microscopic laser measurements to detect hinge depth variations and then applying a 3D liquid polymer. This process not only smoothed out the hinge but also resulted in a slimmer profile compared to earlier foldable designs.

Reports have previously indicated that the iPhone Fold aims to rival devices like the Oppo Find N6 in its pursuit of minimizing display creasing, a factor that appears to be a significant development priority for Apple. The company is already familiar with 3D printing technology, having incorporated 3D printed titanium casings into its Apple Watch series and, according to some rumors, the iPhone Air's USB-C port. Beyond precision, 3D printing offers notable advantages in manufacturing efficiency and material conservation compared to traditional forging methods.
