Surging Memory Component Costs

The impact of the memory market is starkly illustrated by TechInsights' findings. Last year, the iPhone 17 Pro's 12GB of DRAM cost Apple approximately $39. However, the same quantity of RAM for the base model iPhone 18 Pro, which is rumored to feature 256GB of internal storage, could now set Apple back a staggering $145. Similarly, the 256GB storage component, previously costing around $13, is now estimated to be in the region of $51.

These increased component expenses translate to a significant jump in production costs. While the base iPhone 17 Pro reportedly cost Apple about $582 to produce, the estimated production cost for the iPhone 18 Pro is projected to reach $726.

Profit Margins and Potential Retail Pricing

TechInsights' research indicates that Apple enjoyed a healthy 47% profit margin on the base iPhone 17 Pro (256GB storage model), which retailed for $1,099 in the US. If Apple aims to maintain a similar profit margin on the iPhone 18 Pro, the smartphone could command a price of $1,371. However, factoring in standard industry pricing strategies, the base iPhone 18 Pro might be launched at $1,299, still yielding a substantial 44% gross profit.

Advanced Camera System Adds to the Cost

The potential price increase isn't solely attributed to memory components. Whispers suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will debut a cutting-edge camera system, boasting a variable-aperture lens. This advanced technology is expected to significantly elevate Apple's costs, with estimates indicating a potential increase of at least 50% over the current camera system. Consequently, when this camera upgrade is factored in, the base iPhone 18 Pro's price could climb to approximately $1,399.

It's also anticipated that these increased costs will ripple through the product line, meaning the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max would likely surpass the iPhone 17 Pro Max's starting price of $1,199.
