iPhone 17e Rear Panel: A MagSafe Upgrade Path for iPhone 16e Users?

Apple's recent unveiling of the iPhone 17e brought with it a suite of subtle yet significant enhancements over its predecessor, the iPhone 16e. Chief among these upgrades is the highly anticipated integration of MagSafe. Excitingly, a recent teardown suggests that existing iPhone 16e owners might not be left out, with the possibility of retrofitting MagSafe functionality through a seemingly straightforward hardware swap.

The experts at iFixit undertook a detailed teardown of the new iPhone 17e. Their findings indicate that by replacing the iPhone 16e's existing rear panel with the one from the iPhone 17e, users could potentially unlock MagSafe compatibility for their older devices.

However, this DIY MagSafe integration isn't without its caveats. The iPhone 16e itself does not natively support the Qi2 charging standard. This means that while MagSafe accessories may attach, users likely won't experience the optimal 15W wireless charging speeds consistently. Furthermore, some of the signature MagSafe software features, such as the distinctive on-screen animation, will remain inaccessible on the older model.

The teardown also shed light on the remarkable component compatibility between the iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e. The analysis revealed that a majority of parts, including the critical logic board, are interchangeable between the two models. Even the battery capacity is identical, with both devices utilizing a 1,728mAh cell.

Despite this extensive cross-compatibility, a notable hurdle emerged: Face ID ceased to function following the rear panel swap, even though the front-facing camera continued to operate correctly. While this limitation might deter some, the overall level of shared components demonstrated by this teardown is a promising indicator for simplified repairs across both iPhone generations.
