Global PC Shipments Plummet 21% in Q3, Counterpoint Research Reports
A recent report from Counterpoint Research has unveiled a significant contraction in the global Personal Computer (PC) market. During the third quarter (Q3) of 2024, spanning the July-September period, total PC shipments reached 57 million units. This figure marks a substantial 21% decline compared to the same period in the previous year, indicating widespread challenges across all leading manufacturers.
Understanding the Drivers Behind the Downturn: Component Costs and Shifting Demand
This notable downturn is primarily attributed to a surge in component costs, particularly for essential DRAM and NAND memory chips. The increased expense of these crucial components has directly translated into higher retail prices for laptops and desktop PCs. Consequently, consumers are delaying upgrades and new purchases, leading to a noticeable drop in demand across the market.
Market Leaders Navigate a Challenging Landscape
Despite the overall market contraction, Lenovo successfully maintained its position as the top player in the global PC market. The company shipped an impressive 15 million units, securing a 26.3% market share for Q3. Following closely, HP captured the second spot with approximately 10.3 million shipments, translating to an 18.1% market share. Dell rounded out the top three, accounting for 7.6 million units shipped and a 13.3% share of the market.
Apple and Asus Defy the Trend with Market Share Gains
Amidst the widespread decline, Apple emerged as a standout performer, actually increasing its market share to 9.8%. This growth was fueled by consistent demand for its MacBook Neo model, with Cupertino shipping an estimated 5.6 million units of its laptops. It's important to note, however, that even Apple's shipments were down 11% year-over-year. Similarly, Asus demonstrated resilience, seeing its market share rise to 9.6%. The company recorded 5.2 million shipments during the quarter, representing an impressive 19.4% increase compared to its Q2 performance.
Future Outlook: Continued Contraction and Stagnant Growth Forecasted
The immediate future for the PC market appears challenging. Projections suggest that shipments will continue their downward trajectory into Q4, with a Counterpoint analyst forecasting an overall market contraction of 27% by year-end. Looking further ahead, the long-term outlook remains cautious, with flat growth anticipated as late as 2027. This indicates a period of adjustment and potential stagnation for the global PC industry.
