Google Powers Up Android Go with Gemini AI

For smartphones built for affordability and efficiency, Android (Go Edition) has long been the go-to operating system. Designed to excel on devices with limited storage, RAM, and processing power, it's a testament to smart optimization. Now, Google is injecting a significant dose of artificial intelligence into this ecosystem, announcing the arrival of Gemini for Android (Go Edition) phones boasting at least 2GB of RAM. This new AI companion is aptly named Gemini Go.

The 2GB RAM minimum has been standard for Android (Go Edition) devices since the Android 13 (Go Edition) update, meaning a substantial number of devices already meet this prerequisite. Google describes Gemini Go as a "streamlined version of Gemini," meticulously crafted to enhance connectivity and productivity, even on devices where storage is at a premium.

Gemini Go steps in to replace the functionality previously offered by Google Assistant Go. Users can access this new AI assistant through the familiar Google Search app. Initiating a conversation with Gemini Go is as intuitive as pressing and holding the Home button, or alternatively, pressing and holding the power button on compatible devices.

The capabilities of Gemini Go are impressively broad for an AI designed for entry-level hardware. It can assist with tasks such as making calls, sending text messages, providing real-time drive time estimates, locating restaurants and EV chargers, setting alarms, scheduling calendar events, and managing media playback, among many other functions. Furthermore, users can enhance Gemini Go's context by uploading documents, photos, and other files directly into conversations.

As is typical with Google's feature rollouts, Gemini Go is being deployed gradually. Given Google's history with such phased releases, it's advisable for users with eligible devices to anticipate a potential waiting period of several weeks before the AI becomes available to them.
