Global PC Market Experiences Significant Downturn in Q3
The global computer market is facing a significant downturn, with the latest data from IDC revealing a substantial 20.1% drop in shipments during the third quarter of the year (July to September) compared to the same period in 2021. This marks the second consecutive quarter of decline, following a more moderate 3.8% decrease in Q2. Shipments also saw a 9.1% dip from the previous quarter, indicating a challenging landscape for the PC industry.
It's important to understand that these figures represent shipments, not direct consumer sales. IDC highlights that during the first half of the year, retailers significantly increased their inventory levels, anticipating future price hikes. Consequently, in Q3, the focus for many retailers shifted from acquiring new stock to diligently clearing existing inventory.
Jitesh Ubrani, IDC's Research Director for Consumer Devices, noted that "channels are now worried about carrying too much inventory into a market where high prices are suppressing demand." While this situation might lead to some promotional offers, IDC anticipates that PC prices will likely remain elevated across the industry. Ubrani further cautioned that "With macro conditions worsening, the risk is that the outlook for the next few quarters gets worse before it gets better."
In terms of market leadership for Q3:
- Lenovo led the pack with 14.9 million shipments, securing a 23.8% market share.
- HP followed with 10.3 million shipments, accounting for a 16.5% market share.
- Dell recorded 7.6 million shipments, holding a 12.1% market share.
- Apple shipped 5.9 million units, representing a 9.5% market share.
- Asus rounded out the top five with 5.5 million shipments and an 8.7% market share.
Looking at year-over-year declines, HP experienced the most significant drop in shipments during Q3, followed by Dell and Lenovo. Asus, however, saw the smallest decline, with Apple also demonstrating resilience in its shipment numbers.
