AT&T Divests Mexican Operations for $2 Billion

After more than a decade as a prominent player in Mexico's telecommunications landscape, AT&T has finalized an agreement to sell its Mexican business. The deal, valued at an impressive $2 billion in cash upon closing, will see AT&T Mexico acquired by Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings. The transaction also includes provisions for additional contractual and contingent benefits.

AT&T's journey in Mexico began in 2015 with the strategic acquisition and subsequent merger of Iusacell and Nextel Mexico, rebranding them under the AT&T banner. This divestiture aligns with AT&T's overarching strategy to redirect its financial resources towards expanding its presence within the dynamic US market. The company's focus will now be on bolstering its domestic fiber and wireless network infrastructure.

CEO John Stankey emphasized AT&T's commitment to investing in future growth areas, particularly in anticipation of an AI-driven future that will rely on converged networks and robust fiber deployments. This strategic shift underscores a move towards prioritizing core domestic competencies and capitalizing on emerging technological trends.

The sale is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2027, contingent upon receiving the necessary regulatory approvals within Mexico. For AT&T customers in the United States, this transaction will not impact their current services or plans.
