Apple Taps Samsung Display for Exclusive Foldable iPhone Panels

Get ready for Apple's foray into the foldable market, as a new report indicates a significant partnership with Samsung Display. Industry insiders suggest that Apple will exclusively rely on Samsung Display for the foldable OLED panels destined for its upcoming foldable iPhone, rumored to be called the iPhone Fold.

According to insights from Korean publication The Elec, this exclusive agreement is slated to last for three years. This means that for this period, Apple will not be sourcing foldable panels from any other manufacturers.

Samsung Display is reportedly gearing up to commence production of these specialized foldable OLED screens in the second quarter, with initial shipments anticipated to reach approximately 3 million units. This sets the stage for a substantial rollout of Apple's first foldable device.

The advanced foldable panels are expected to incorporate Samsung's cutting-edge Color-on-Encapsulation (CoE) technology. This innovation streamlines the panel structure by positioning a color filter layer above the encapsulation layer, effectively eliminating the need for a polarizer. Furthermore, these panels are rumored to feature Samsung's M14 luminescent material, a technology also found in the high-end iPhone 17 Pro Max, promising impressive display quality.

While the official moniker remains unconfirmed, Apple's highly anticipated first foldable iPhone, potentially branded as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, is reportedly scheduled for a September unveiling. This launch is expected to coincide with the introduction of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, rounding out Apple's next-generation smartphone lineup.
