Apple's Smart Display: Evolution Underway with Enhanced HomeView in Development

While Apple's foray into the smart home display market with the HomeView has captured a specific audience, it's not without its limitations. The current iteration appears to cater primarily to existing Apple ecosystem users, potentially overlooking those who have already invested in smart home devices from competing brands. Despite a dedicated niche, the HomeView exhibits clear shortcomings, most notably the absence of screen swivel functionality.

However, a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggests Apple is actively addressing these criticisms. The company is reportedly working on a significantly improved version of its smart display, aiming to rectify the current model's deficiencies and expand its appeal.

Introducing the Next Generation HomeView: Larger Screen and Advanced Features

Rumored to potentially launch under names like HomeView Ultra, Max, or 360, this next-generation device is expected to feature a larger 9-inch display. Crucially, this screen will be mounted on a robotic arm, directly addressing the non-swiveling nature of the original HomeView. This innovative design will allow the screen to dynamically adjust its position, enhancing user interaction and viewing angles.

Gurman's insights also shed light on the HomeView's development history, revealing it to be a relatively old project that spent a considerable amount of time in storage while software refinements were made. This could explain some of the design choices in the initial release, such as its substantial bezels, the inclusion of an A18 chip, and 8GB of RAM. The product's launch was reportedly subject to multiple postponements, moving from spring 2025 to subsequent seasons and even into the current year.

Future of HomeView: Enhanced Personalization and Expected Release Window

The upcoming 9-inch HomeView, codenamed J595, is currently projected for release between 2027 and 2028. A key innovation will be its ability to identify individual users, with the screen intelligently following them thanks to the articulated metal arm. While it's anticipated to come with a higher price tag than its predecessor, the exact cost remains undisclosed.
