Apple Gears Up for Gaming: Two New Controllers Spotted in macOS Code

While Apple is known for its innovative and often ubiquitous tech products, the company occasionally ventures into less conventional territory. Following in the footsteps of quirky accessories of the past, it appears Apple is exploring a new frontier: gaming controllers. Evidence unearthed within the code of macOS 26.7 suggests that Cupertino is actively developing not one, but two distinct gaming controllers.

This discovery was made alongside other potential unannounced Apple devices within the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate. Other intriguing finds included references to AirPods with integrated cameras and potentially updated HomePod mini models, alongside speculation of a new security camera. However, the mentions of codenames "T6502" and "T1057," both explicitly identified as game controllers, stand out as particularly noteworthy.

While details are still emerging, the identified controllers seem to adhere to modern gaming standards. Both models reportedly feature a familiar ABXY button layout, two clickable thumbsticks, shoulder buttons, analog triggers, and essential Home and Menu buttons. This suggests a focus on a user-friendly and familiar gaming experience for Apple users.

Delving deeper, the T6502 appears to be the more streamlined of the two. It's reported to offer USB connectivity but lacks advanced features like motion sensors, a built-in microphone, or speaker. However, it does include an Options button and boasts an impressive four separate haptic channels. These haptic channels are divided between two motors, with two channels allocated per motor. Interestingly, half of these channels are described as "software," hinting at the potential for sophisticated haptic feedback, allowing for nuanced vibrations and tactile responses.

The presence of these controller references in macOS 26.7 was initially public but was subsequently removed in a later release candidate. It remains unclear whether these mentions were entirely purged or simply hidden. Regardless, this development raises intriguing questions about Apple's future in the gaming landscape. If these controllers materialize, it signals a potential strategic push into a niche market, leaving us to ponder what gaming-related announcements Apple might have in store.
