Snapdragon Wear Elite: The Future of Smartwatches and AI Wearables Arrives

Qualcomm has unveiled its latest system-on-a-chip (SoC) designed specifically for wrist wearables. Embracing the "Elite" moniker, this new chip promises significant upgrades in power and introduces on-device Artificial Intelligence capabilities, signaling a new era for "agentic AI" in personal technology. Expect the Snapdragon Wear Elite to be the driving force behind the next generation of flagship Wear OS smartwatches and innovative AI-powered wearables like smart pins and pendants, with expanded support for both Android and Linux platforms.

Performance is a key focus for the Snapdragon Wear Elite. Qualcomm reports substantial leaps compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2 platform. Users can anticipate up to a 5x improvement in CPU performance, a remarkable 7x boost in GPU capabilities, and an impressive 30% increase in battery life. Built on an advanced 3nm architecture, the Wear Elite features a five-core CPU configuration: one prime core operating at 2.1GHz and four performance cores running at 1.9GHz, complemented by a dedicated co-processor.

A groundbreaking addition for Qualcomm's Wear series is the inclusion of a dedicated Hexagon Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This NPU is specifically engineered for agentic AI assistants, boasting a formidable 12 TOPS of performance and the capacity to handle models with up to 2 billion parameters. This on-device AI processing power will enable more sophisticated and responsive intelligent features directly on your wearable.

Connectivity receives a significant upgrade with the Snapdragon Wear Elite. It introduces support for 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap), designed to offer lower latency and extended battery efficiency. For scenarios where cellular coverage is unavailable, the chip includes support for NB-NTN (Narrowband Non-Terrestrial Networks). Further enhancing its connectivity suite are Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, UWB, and dual-band GNSS positioning for precise location tracking.

Qualcomm is offering flexibility to device manufacturers by allowing them to choose versions of the SoC with specific connectivity features removed, tailoring devices to different market needs and cost points.

Powering up your devices will also be faster. The Snapdragon Wear Elite supports fast charging, with Qualcomm claiming that devices equipped with the new SoC can reach a 50% charge in under 10 minutes, ensuring you spend less time tethered to an outlet.
