This change specifically targets a range of affordable models, impacting the entire OnePlus lineup available in China and Oppo's A and K series smartphones.

It's important to note that this price increase does not currently extend to Oppo's premium Reno and Find series smartphones, nor their tablet offerings. This strategic decision likely reflects the higher profit margins associated with these flagship devices.

Understanding the Market Dynamics Driving Price Changes

While official explanations are scarce, industry observers point to a significant factor influencing these price hikes: the booming demand for AI data centers. These centers are voracious consumers of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a specialized type of memory chip. Consequently, memory chip manufacturers are redirecting their production away from the DRAM and NAND flash chips essential for smartphones, prioritizing HBM instead.

This increased demand for HBM directly translates to higher costs for memory components used in smartphones. As a result, smartphone manufacturers are facing increased production expenses. The most vulnerable devices are the entry-level and more budget-friendly models, as they operate on thinner profit margins to begin with.

Data from IDC highlights the growing impact of memory semiconductors on production costs. These components now represent over 20% of the total cost for smartphone manufacturing, a notable increase from previous years where the figure hovered between 10% and 15%. For entry-level smartphones, this proportion can even reach as high as 30%.
