OnePlus CEO Pete Lau Faces Arrest Warrant in Taiwan Over Illegal Hiring Scandal

Pete Lau, co-founder and chief executive officer of the renowned smartphone brand OnePlus, is currently facing significant legal challenges in Taiwan. Prosecutors there have issued an arrest warrant against the tech executive, citing serious allegations of illegal hiring practices within the region.

The Shilin District Prosecutors' Office in Taiwan officially announced the indictment on Tuesday, which also implicated two Taiwanese citizens for allegedly assisting in these recruitment activities. Authorities claim that under Lau’s direction, OnePlus employed more than 70 local engineers for crucial software development and testing roles.

The core of the legal issue stems from the fact that these extensive hiring operations reportedly proceeded without the necessary government approval. This alleged breach directly violates Taiwan's "Cross-Strait Act," a critical piece of legislation governing relations and activities between China and Taiwan. As of now, neither Pete Lau nor OnePlus has released an official statement regarding these serious accusations.
