While official reports from Google initially indicated a slow rollout for Android 16, our recent poll paints a different picture. Our tech-savvy community appears to be significantly ahead of the general adoption curve, with a clear majority of voters reporting they are already running the latest Android version on their devices.

The reasons for this early adoption are varied. For a small but significant portion (7%), their journey to Android 16 was a simple case of purchasing a new smartphone that came pre-loaded with the operating system. However, the overwhelming majority (55%) of respondents received Android 16 through a timely software update.

Conversely, a notable segment of our readership (around a third) remains on older Android versions. This can be attributed to two primary factors: either they are patiently awaiting updates from their device manufacturers, as update timelines can vary considerably by brand, or their devices have reached the end of their software support lifecycle.

An intriguing observation from the poll is that approximately 5% of users have intentionally chosen to remain on older Android versions. Their rationale includes concerns that certain updates might remove cherished features, negatively impact device performance, or introduce unwelcome changes to the user interface.

Further insights gleaned from the poll's comments suggest a prevailing sentiment within our community: a perceived slowdown in Android innovation. Many feel that recent OS versions haven't introduced substantial advancements, diminishing the urgency to upgrade. This feeling of incremental change is another key factor contributing to the reluctance of some to move to the newest Android iteration.

Although not an official poll option, a recurring theme in the comments revealed that some users are experiencing Android 16 via custom ROMs. While the popularity of custom ROMs has waned with the maturation of Android and the increased customization options offered by manufacturer-specific UIs, they remain a viable path for some. The increasing prevalence of devices with locked bootloaders, however, presents a growing challenge to the continued accessibility and development of custom ROMs.
